On October 6 and 7, 2023, the I Meeting for the Chiquitanía Territory was held, focused on the creation of a Departmental Water Security plan for Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
Legislators from the Government and Municipalities participated in this meeting, as well as authorities from academia, international cooperation institutions, NGOs and Indigenous peoples. The Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) was represented by Dr. Mónica Moraes and Dr. Federico Viscarra, who presented the main policy documents developed by the panel regarding water resources, which highlight the importance of interrelationships between “Water – Forest – People” as well as the moratorium on deforestation and forest fires, the restoration of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and the development of a socio-bioeconomy of healthy standing forests and flowing rivers.
The representatives also participated in the inter-institutional and participatory worktables, which had as a final result, a roadmap with a view to the implementation of a Departmental Water Security Plan.
